chapter 7 - sorry this is so late, guys! )
This evening I did something I never do. I went out for coffee with a friend. I only met her a couple weeks ago on a new social networking site for nerds. By chance, she was sent to Albuquerque for training at Sandia National Labs. She contacted me and we texted each other yesterday when she arrived in town since we had decided to grab a coffee together. I got a text from her after work, asking if I wanted to meet up at the place across from her hotel. We had a cup of coffee and chatted for over two hours outside on the patio. The weather was nice, especially after the sun set. It was a good time, and we may meet up later this week before she leaves to return to D.C.

In the past week two different people have contacted me to ask permission to translate a couple of my SS/HG fics into Russian. Has anyone got similar requests? It just thought it was odd for two different people to contact me in such a short period of time regarding that.

I watched Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind Saturday night and thought it was slow and slightly clumsy at times. As a whole, I didn't really enjoy it. There were good parts, but a couple of the subplots were completely unnecessary. There were not interesting or likable characters. And, personally, I disliked Kate Winslet's character with a passion. I understand where they were going with it and what they were trying to convey, but I felt as if they did a sloppy job of it. Actually, in general, I feel as if movies are too long. At first, I thought this might be due to my watching anime and developing a dwindling attention span. Now, I'm not so sure. I sat down and watched The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, which is about two and a half hours long, and was completely engrossed because it is a masterpiece. Das Boot, a German film about U-boats during World War II was nearly four hours, and I couldn't take my eyes off the screen. I can watch Tarkovsky films over and over without tiring of them or my attention dwindling, and he is notorious for long films that drone on and on. I think I've just honed in on what I appreciate and enjoy movie-wise. And if I feel the filmmakers are trying to put one over on me, I shut down.

I met Farmer Monte! I played it cool, but I was totally jazzed because he's like a celebrity to me.

Farmer Monte is the fellow who runs Los Poblanos Organics. He's an organic gardening guru. I get my weekly CSA produce boxes from Los Poblanos, and they are the best thing ever. Anyway, I switched the pick up location this week, and Farmer Monte was there. He bestowed me with a box of fresh fruits and veggies. Only I could get excited over meeting the guy who grows my veggies. Really. This week's box had asparagus in it, and I roasted the bunch this evening for dinner. A bit of olive oil, some sea salt, a dash of pepper, and some minced garlic make asparagus very happy. I could live off it.

Spring, please come to me. I hate this cold weather. Living in the foothills of the city has its perks (yay for hiking on the trails across the street), but one of them is not the high winds and chilly temperatures compared to where I work down by the river.

I'm making progress on my Doctor Who fic! It's written with the exception of the epilogue and a few bits and pieces I need to insert into the last few chapters. I hope to have the first chapter or two posted next week.
I know most of you on my flist don't give two figs about Doctor Who fic, especially Nine/Rose, but I'm posting it here anyway. It's my LJ; I'll do what I want. ::sticks out tongue:: ;-)

I stumbled across this article while wasting time at work. There was a bit of legal discussion in there regarding fanfiction that I found really interesting.

Friction over Fanfiction

"Henry Jenkins, author of Textual Poachers: Television Fans and Participatory Culture, argues that the impulse to write fan fiction is no different from the creative impulse driving any other narrative genre. It is part of a fundamental human need to tell stories, part of a “shared cultural tradition” dating from Homer onward. According to Jenkins, the works on which fan fiction is based serve for fan communities the same purpose as myths and folklore served in earlier times, as a source of shared references having instant recognition in that community and a source of raw material for fans’ own creative works. Contemporary web culture is, he says, the traditional folk process working at lightning speed on a global scale."

- We're getting a real receptionist at work. The current pseudo-receptionist (who can't spell) gave notice yesterday since she'll be tied up with school and unable to work the proper hours. I put an ad in the classified to run this weekend. Now, I just have to cross my fingers that we get decent applicants.

- I started writing a fic yesterday. It's over 5,000 words at the moment, but I'm not sure where I'm taking it. It's Draco/Hermione. I don't know how good it is because I've never written that 'ship before and I gave up on reading so many of the Dramione stories because Draco was suddenly a super suave fellow who secretly loved Hermione the entire time. It weirds me out. If anyone 'ships the Dramione and wants to read it to tell me if it's utter shit or not, please contact me. I suspect my flist is filled with non-HP readers or SS/HG, LM/HG 'shippers, though.

- At least it's Friday. I'm taking Monday off because I feel like it.

EDIT: **He's actually 19. I feel a bit better now.
Since I've been unable to write anything recently, I thought I'd try my hand at this meme from [livejournal.com profile] sunshade. You are supposed to let your music player randomly select songs for you and write a drabble for each song while that song is playing. Once the song is finished, you must stop writing. I can't do it. My problem isn't so much a lack of inspiration (though that is certainly there), it is more due to the fact that I can't write drabbles for squat. I feel like I need to explain, continue, elaborate. I can't just write a scene without explanation of how I got to the scene or some sort of conclusion (even if it is half-assed). This is probably why I rarely read drabbles. I have nothing against them, and I don't mind others writing them, but I'm one of those people who usually skips over then in favor of that next fic which has eight thousand words. Eight thousand delicious words. Something to sink my teeth into as a reader. Drabbles always leave me wanting more, and then I get sad because I can't click the next button for the conclusion.

Maybe this means I just can't live in the moment. I want to know the past and the future. I want plans. Plans. Oh god, how I love you, plans.

So, yeah... no writing for me. Although, I've been thinking about writing Draco/Hermione just to get this monkey off my back. I could even write it canon without too much difficulty (i.e. I wouldn't have to raise someone from the dead). This is keeping in mind that I've completely forgotten about the epilogue to DH. So, if you're a stickler, it would be canon minus the epilogue. We don't need no stinkin' babies.

Jason and I are watching Planetes, an anime series from a few years ago. It's good, but it just hasn't clicked with me. He loves it. I'm sad that there aren't any yummy characters for me to watch. Because I'm that shallow. In all seriousness, though, it is a very good program and I'd recommend it to anyone interested in a more realistic view of space exploration in the next hundred years. But no pretty boys. Sorry.

What's wrong with me? I've taken to reading Draco/Hermione fics. I hate Draco. Or at least I thought I did. I feel all dirty now.

I forgot to mention that Jason and I watched Der Untergang (Downfall) this past weekend, and it was absolutely amazing. Wow. It is an extremely powerful film. Even if you have no interest in the fall of the Third Reich, I still highly recommend it.
Following up on this entry, the first season of Robin Hood still hasn't finished downloading. My impatience is astounding.

I'm reading Le Morte D'Arthur, which I'm enjoying more than I had originally thought I would. However, is it possible, Sir Thomas Malory, to put a lid on the copious and extensive discussions of who exactly knocked whom off his horse, and who then who re-horsed that fellow?

The receptionist is the most annoying person in the world. She makes my eye twitch. It isn't that she's a bad employee or difficult to get along with. My problem is that she is so needy. So needy. She asks me if she can help me three to four times a day, which is pretty ridiculous and excessive. When she has a doctor appointment, she tells me about it fifteen times, and then gives me a frickin' schedule of when she plans to leave, how long it will take her to get there, and when she will expect to return. Appreciated and all, but I have other shit to attend to, and my world does not revolve around your multiple doctor appointments. She's a sickly one. Actually, she's not very sickly, but she loves to make a fuss over little things. Payroll Girl is gone this morning, and that means all the pressure is on me to appease Miss Receptionist. And I'm just really not in the mood today. I'm actually going out of my way to avoid her. I need to go fax a couple things downstairs, but I'm putting it off because she's down there, and I'd have to walk by her desk.

award nominations for moi? )
I'm writing again. What? Can this be? Well, I did write that Snape/Hermione fic for the SS/HG Exchange, but that was under duress since I volunteered to pinch hit before I could stop myself. I like the way it turned out, but I nearly went mad with worry over the week that I did write it.

Anyway, Tin Man fic is falling out of my head. Or out of my fingertips. After a false start which I scrapped on Saturday night, I began anew on Sunday afternoon. It's already up to 8,000 words. How did that happen? Typically, I write way slower.

I found a little tea shop a couple miles from my apartment, and I've spent $60 there since Friday. They have a wonderful selection of loose leaf tea, though. I've already had three cups today.

Has anyone read Susan Cooper's The Dark is Rising sequence? I have the first three novels in it, and I'm anxious to begin the first (Over Sea, Under Stone). Will I love it or hate it?
I watched Tin Man on the internet while at work today. Things were slow, if you couldn't guess. I'd never seen it before, but I had caught a couple minutes of it here and there while it was airing on Sci-Fi. Halfway through the mini-series, I pulled up a few fic communities to see what pairings people were enjoying the most. I picked a few short ones featuring pairings that appealed to me and gave them a quick read. All that did was make me want to close the window and watch the rest of the mini-series so I could come back and write something better. Because seriously? Woah... they were a hot mess with OOC out the ass. I'm sure the longer, chaptered fics are much better, and I'm very much looking forward to sitting down and having a read tonight, but now I feel like I need to write something to balance out the badness of what I read.

Which leads me to a question I've been wondering about...

I'm not opposed to slash, and I do read it on occasion. However, none of my favorite pairings have been slash, and I've never written slash. Pronoun confusion and all, you know. Anyway, I've always wondered if there is a disproportionate number of poorly written fics in the het realm of things when compared to slash. For those of you who read both, have you noticed this trend? Are there more bad het fics than slash fics? I know there are good fics and bad fics in both areas, but I've always wondered if I'm getting the short end of the stick since I tend to read het fics much more often.

P.S. - Could his pants be any tighter? The picture doesn't show the tight!pants properly. I need some screen caps up in this mo'fo.
So, Jason and I are watching Fullmetal Alchemist. Because I can't not do it, I start 'shipping people. I have a serious thing for the close friends/working relationship becomes romantic. Hello? Mulder/Scully. Anita/Edward. Motoko/Batou. Drizzt/Catti-brie. Alucard/Intregra. And on and on. So, naturally, I love Roy/Riza. All you yaoi fans are disappointed in me, I know. I'm a het girl through and through. My problem is that I can't find any good fics involving my preferred pairing. Those I have read involve OOC-ness to the max and subpar writing. I'm coming directly from Snape/Hermione, and as much as that pairing gets bagged on, there are loads of amazing fic that come out of it. So, if anyone is familiar with FMA or Royai in particular, please rec me some lovely fics that will make me squee with delight.

Jason + Christmas Shopping = Hell. He told me I was giving him attitude. I told him he shouldn't try to do all his shopping in two hours. He used my cellphone to make several frenzied calls from Hastings (video/book store) when he couldn't find the second season of Grey's Anatomy for his sister. Who watches Grey's Anatomy, anyway? It looks boring as all get out. And, we spent almost half an hour in the toy department of Target while he played with every toy that made a sound, trying to find the perfect one for his niece. I did make him buy me biscotti to have with my tea tonight, so the day wasn't a complete bust.

Speaking of tea... The new Sleepytime Extra tea with valerian sends me to dreamland before I finish the cup. I've been drinking it before bed for the past week. Even with a lingering cough, I sleep through the night and then some. It's a miracle sleep aid! I must go buy more.

Well, this is an interesting tattoo. I'd never thought of an armpit like that. I keep looking at it for some reason. Eww.
finances at work ramblings )

I ordered chopsticks online. The two pair I bought are gorgeous. Once they arrive, I'll post pictures. While I was perusing the Asian Market website, I also bought a tea cup with a filter and a lid. Cleaning out the ball I have for loose tea is a huge pain in the ass, so the alternative method of brewing loose leaf tea by the cup is very much appreciated.

It's been so long since I've read anything. Oh, okay, it's been about two weeks. I started Shadow's Witness by Paul Kemp a week ago, but I've been distracted by so many other things. One of those things isn't an excuse any longer. I know I said I finished my SS/HG pinch hit fic earlier this week, but I went back and added a few more thousand words to it in order to wrap things up properly. It really is finished, beta'd and submitted now. Tonight, mark my words, I will read at least one hundred pages of Erevis Cale's adventures.

I'm regretful. :-( This cold I caught has an appetite. Every time I turn around, I feel like shoving food in my mouth. I went to get cough syrup at the drug store, and I ended up buying cookies. I ate half the flippin' box -- probably twenty cookies. In my defense, they are small wafer cookies, and (for cookies) they seem to be fairly healthy with the calories. But, my tummy still hurts from eating too many sweets. I wish I had a Time Turner to go back to approximately 12:45pm when I bought the damn things. Ugh.

Ha! I finished my SS/HG Exchange fic last night, edited it this morning, and just sent it off to be beta-ed. It's the fastest I've ever written 9,000 words.

Someone e-mailed me a link to the Candidate Calculator. It gives you a list of several important issues and allows you to mark your support (or not) of them. Once finished, the magic of the internet will tell you which presidential candidate you most match up with. Mine was a tie between Ron Paul and Mike Gravel. I  them both. Sadly, they are not front runners. All the front runners? They were listed in my "bottom of the barrel" choices. Go figure.

I've decided that the Spinner.com article about the best opening lines of songs is completely full of shit. They forgot to include the best opening line ever. What line is this, you ask? "I guess I should have known by the way you parked your car sideways that it wouldn't last." Little Red Corvette by Prince. Come on... That's obviously the best line ever.
