CHAPTER 6

It took them most of the morning to reach the TARDIS. Rose had been hopelessly lost, but the Doctor seemed to know his way through the thick forest. Despite being weary from the hike back, when she had seen the end of the forest Rose had run into the clearing and lifted her face to the mid-day sun. Its warmth was a welcome change from the shady, dank forest.

The blue TARDIS stuck out like a sore thumb in the pale yellow grass of the meadow. Once they reached it Rose announced that she needed a shower and a change of clothes. The Doctor was busy with the analysis of the ground beneath them and didn’t object to her taking time out of their investigation.

Just as she stepped out of the shower and wrapped a towel around herself, she heard a clamour in the control room. Worried that someone had got in the TARDIS and attacked the Doctor, she sprinted down the hall, clutching the oversized bath towel around her body.

“Doctor, are you all right?” she asked as she burst into the room.

“Fantastic, Rose! Fantastic!” he exclaimed, hitting the console in triumph. He was watching the screen scroll through measurements and readings that she couldn’t hope to understand. “There is something beneath us. A very large something—probably a facility of some sort. We should—” The Doctor trailed off when he looked up and saw she was not dressed.

Rose glanced down nervously and was suddenly very aware of the fact that she was barefoot and wet with only a towel to protect her modesty. “I heard banging. Thought you might be in trouble.”

“Oh.” The Doctor dropped his eyes back to the screen. “Just doing a bit of celebrating. Guess I might have got carried away.”

Rose nodded awkwardly and pulled the towel tighter. “Right,” she said. “So, a facility, huh? Is there a way to get in from here?”

“Looks like. An access shaft is about fifteen metres southwest of here.” He pointed at a diagram on the screen.

Rose stepped up to the console and looked over his shoulder at the screen. It showed a shaft descending from the surface into what looked like an underground warehouse. “What’s this for? I thought this planet didn’t have any technology.”

“Exactly.” The Doctor suddenly stood up and found himself almost pressed against Rose.

She stepped to the side to let him around her. “I’ll just go get dressed then,” she said, biting her lower lip nervously.

The Doctor was looking down at her, his face unreadable but his eyes intent. He turned to fully face her, and Rose stepped away, the backs of her legs hitting the console. “You ran in here in nothing but a towel because you thought I was in trouble?” His voice was low and husky.

Rose was finding it difficult to breathe. “Well… yeah.” She absently flicked her tongue to lick the corner of her mouth. “I heard noise, and you were yelling.”

“In a towel? What did you think you would do? Beat the intruders to death with a towel?” A small grin was playing at the corners of his mouth.

“Saying it like that makes me sound ridiculous,” Rose said, pushing off the console and stepping into his personal space.

When he stood his ground, she looked down and ran her fingers along the lapels of his leather jacket. His hands clenched into tight fists. Rose glanced up to his face and saw that his lips were slightly parted, and he was watching her with heat in his eyes. “What are you thinking?” she whispered.

“You don’t want to know,” he murmured.

“’Course I do. Wouldn’t have asked if I didn’t.”

“Rose, you’re naked.”

“I’m wearing a towel,” she said, smiling up at him.

“Yes, but you’re naked under the towel.”

She could sense the tension in his body, almost feel the heat coming off him. His eyes steely blue eyes made her feel warm, especially at the apex of her thighs. It was so much easier dealing with him in the light. Down in the Sarhn’s hole, she couldn’t determine his reactions to her, but now she could see he was fighting attraction.

Rose stuck her tongue out of the corner of her mouth again. “You thinking about me naked?” she asked with a grin.

His hand on her waist made Rose jerk in surprise. “Don’t toy with me, Rose.”

Spreading her hands out on his chest, she leaned closer. “Then don’t you toy with me. What happened to ‘you’re a human, I’m a Time Lord’?”

“Still stands,” he said, putting his other hand on her hip and stepping forward to push her back against the console again.

Rose felt the metal frame pressing into the backs of her thighs. She slipped her hands over his shoulders and pulled him down to her. “Then what do you think you’re doing?”

The Doctor’s lips hovered over hers, and she could feel the gentle puffs of his breath on her face. “No idea what I’m doing. I trip over myself to make you happy.”

She grinned and tried to kiss him, but he playfully pulled back just enough so she couldn’t. “Does that mean you’ll do whatever I tell you?” she asked.

“You’re a dangerous one, Rose Tyler,” he said softly as he chuckled under his breath. He leaned closer, running his nose along her shoulder and neck. “I can smell you.”

“Oh, yeah? What do I smell like?” Rose could barely keep her feet beneath her, so it was a good thing his hands were still firmly on her waist.

“Soap, warmth,” he paused before meeting her eyes and continuing. “Arousal.”

“Oh.” Rose swallowed. “You can… smell that, then?”

He nodded slowly. “It’s all over you. You humans are very obvious when it comes to that.”

“Sorry. Didn’t mean to broadcast it,” she said, winking at him.

His hands slid over her hips and then to the small of her back, caressing it through the towel. “I shouldn’t be doing this,” he confided to her. “It’s very wrong.”

“Feels quite nice, actually,” Rose replied as she stroked the nape of his neck with her fingertips. Her body was humming, and the euphoria of having him touch her like this and look at her like that made her giddy with happiness.

“I should stop.”

“Don’t,” she whispered.

“Rose, we shouldn’t—” Suddenly, he removed his hands from her and dropped them to his sides. “We really shouldn’t do this,” he said, stepping away from her.

She leaned back against the console to keep from melting to the floor. Her knees were weak, and her body was aching for him. And now her blissful train of thought was turning into anger. Taking two steps forward left her directly in front of him again. She pulled back her first and punched him as hard as she could in his shoulder.

Unfortunately, as hard as she could didn’t amount to very hard at all. He absorbed the punch easily. By then tears were forming in her eyes, and it made her even angrier to know that he had made her cry so many times in just the past two days. And here she had promised herself that she wouldn’t waste another tear on something so hopeless.

“Rose,” the Doctor said softly, reaching out for her.

“Don’t,” she said, holding up her hand to ward him away. “Just don’t. Don’t touch me like that and then tell me it can’t happen. You know what you’re doing.” She sniffed and wiped the tears from her face. “You know I’m in love with you. And then you just—you just… stop.”

“You’re—you’re in with love me?” The Doctor’s voice was confused.

Rose pushed past him and hurried into the depths of the TARDIS to find her bedroom and some clothes.

*********************************

She took her time getting dressed, and didn’t emerge from her room for well over an hour. It took her that long to compose herself enough to see him again.

The Doctor was reclining in the chair by the main console when Rose returned. She schooled her face to impassiveness, or at least as close as she could manage, and nodded at him. “Ready to go?”

He leaned forward in the chair and rested his elbows on his knees. “Rose,” he began, looking at her with such a serious expression on his face. She didn’t want to hear it.

“I don’t want to talk about it,” Rose said, turning away from him and walking to the door. “Are we going to check out this place or not?”

“I’d like to--”

She shook her head at him. “Well, I don’t. Come on. Let’s go solve the mystery, Doctor.”

He watched her in silence for a long moment before finally standing up and accompanying her out the door and back into the meadow. The mid-day sun had slid down the horizon, denoting late afternoon.

The Doctor paced off the distance between the TARDIS and the hidden access shaft while Rose followed along behind. She was annoyed with herself because despite all the turmoil in her mind about the Doctor and their relationship, she was still watching his bum like a little schoolgirl.

“Should be right about here.” He dropped down to his knees and examined the ground, shifting the blades of grass around and looking for a trap door of some sort. Every now and then he tapped on the ground. After only a few seconds of searching, Rose heard a hollow thump when the Doctor’s fist hit the earth. A moment later, he was pulling up the hatch that had been covered with very realistic fake grass.

“Found it,” the Doctor said, looking at her with a triumphant smile.

Rose forced herself to smile back at him. “Great.” She watched his head disappear beneath the surface.

Stepping up to the edge, she saw a long shaft with a vertical ladder secured to the wall of it. Lights at periodic points illuminated the way. “Shut the door on your way down,” the Doctor called up to her.

She stepped cautiously onto the ladder and pulled the hatch shut behind her with a resounding thump that echoed through the shaft. By the time she had descended a third of the way down the ladder, the Doctor was already at the bottom waiting for her. He stood with his hands on his hips and his head tilted up to watch her progress.

“You’re making me nervous,” she said.

“How am I doing that?”

“Don’t look at my bum while I’m climbing down the ladder.”

She looked down and saw him smiling up at her. “You look at mine all the time. I think it’s only fair for me to--”

“I do not!” Rose yelled, blushing at the thought of the Doctor knowing when she was checking him out.

“You did just now when we were walking over here.”

Gritting her teeth, Rose continued down the ladder. “I have no idea what you’re talking about, Doctor.”

“You’re a terrible liar, Rose Tyler.”

When she reached the bottom, she pushed past him and glanced down the hallway. There were no doors, but there was a single track inlaid on the floor. No indication what it was meant to be for, though. “We’re in the middle of an investigation. I’d rather not talk about your bum at the moment,” Rose said with all the dignity she could muster.

She turned around and found the Doctor grinning at her. He raised his brows.

Stop it!” Rose said, playfully smacking him on the arm and marching off down the hallway.
