When I got the crabs, I knew they would shed their shells when they became too big for them. After they molt, they hide and allow the new exterior tissue to harden. I certainly wasn't prepared for how frickin' weird this would be.

This afternoon, I noticed Flotsam (the larger crab) was a very odd reddish color. I opened the top of the aquarium to get a closer look, but she didn't move. (She always runs away when you open the lid.) I was concerned she might be sick, so I took a closer look. It was then that I realized there were no eyes. The protruding little eye stalks were gone and there were just holes in their place. At that point, I assumed she had molted her shell and was hiding from me. After dinner, I checked on her again. And there she was sitting atop the rock cave enjoying herself. Her skeleton was still sitting outside the cave in the water. I scooped it out with a spoon and stuck it in a bowl.

Just looking at it freaks me out. It is completely intact, even all eight little legs and the pinchers. If you flip it over, there is a flap where she backed out of the shell. I can't bring myself to touch it just yet. It's just too weird.

Here's a picture of the skeleton:

In other news, I finished my knitted purse. I felted it this morning and hung it up to dry. I used some lovely yarn I snagged off eBay. I made it wider and a bit shallower than the pattern called for. I also used three different colors (purple, grey, pink) because I didn't have enough of just two colors to make it work properly. And, I made the handles a bit longer so I can put it over my shoulder.

I promised [livejournal.com profile] neriah a bag after I finished mine. If you're reading this, you want crimson-ish colors, right? Like a sunset? Let me know and I'll get to it.

So, the stupid crabs hate each other. Or at least Flotsam hates Jetsam.

A couple days ago, I thought Jetsam was going to die. She dropped four of her eight little legs and turned an odd color - much lighter than the other. I assumed she had molted just before I bought her, and that the trauma of being placed in a new environment shocked her system beyond what it could handle.

Apparently not.

Jason and I were getting ready to go out to dinner when we noticed both the crabs were out and about. We were amazed Jetsam was still alive and moving around on four legs. Just then Flotsam comes around the corner and JUMPS on Jetsam's back. Like some sort of crab sneak attack. She proceeded to stab Jetsam in the back with her evil little pinchers. I wasn't about to stick my finger in the middle of a crab fight, so I flipped Flotsam off with a spoon. Could it be that she's responsible for Jetsam's missing legs? Before dinner, we dropped by the pet store and got a divider for the aquarium. When we got home, I fished them both out and put them in separate containers while I reorganized the stupid tank with a divider down the middle to prevent them from fighting.

I was told by everyone (including all the websites on these suckers) that they were NOT aggressive. Apparently, there are exceptions to the rule in every species, even crabs. Flotsam is a total bitch, and she's beating up my other poor crab. So, they're separated now. They each of their own cave and their own beach and their own food.

And if Flotsam scales the aquarium divider and dives into Jetsam side, then I'm going to flush her down the frickin' toilet.

A continuation of this post.

Crabs are incredibly fast. So fast that I have a difficult time taking a picture of them once they see me walking by. Their little crab brains think, Oh shit, it's that girl again. Hide! Hide! She's going to fuck with our rock caves again.

However, I just caught one of them on camera. I have proof of my mythical crabs. Or at least I have proof of one of them.

So, I present you with Flotsam. She's a bit larger, darker, and more spunky than Jetsam. Jetsam is terrified. Flotsam is just annoyed that I keep screwing around with their underwater environment.

She hesitated at the cave entrace and I caught her. Bwhahaha!

This is really pathetic that I am walking back and forth through my own apartment with a digital camera trying to catch a quick picture before they see me. Jetsam would have been in the picture, but she made it inside the cave before I could hit the button. Bitch.

No, not those crabs. Actual crabs from PetSmart. I'd show you a picture of them, but they are both terrified beyond the telling of it and refuse to emerge from the three rock caves I've gifted them with. But I did take a picture of the lovely home I've given them.

While I'm posting pictures, I snapped these two of Ferguson while he was napping in my favorite chair. Each moring at 9:30 the sun from the skylight hits that chair.

And, lastly, a picture of the flowers El gave me yesterday. Just because they're so pretty, and I like to be a girl over flowers sometimes.
