I picked up a copy of Hannibal by Ross Leckie on Tuesday after I got off work. I didn't expect to finish it before my extended weekend was finished because I'm also reading another novel that I thought would hold my interest more. Haha. Not so. I finished Hannibal by Thursday evening. It's not a very long novel - around 250 pages - but it was so very good. It's not about our beloved Hannibal Lecter, but about Hannibal Barca, better known as Hannibal the Conqueror. He led an army of men and elephants over the Alps to destroy Rome. He didn't succeed, but it was a near thing. Anyway, history has never held that much sway over me because the presentation of it tends to be dry. However, I wallow in my love of it when the people involved are made more real to me. I'm sure Leckie exaggerated or simply got some things wrong, but I love that he wrote the novel as if it were a long lost memoir of Hannibal's. The entire novel was heartbreaking.
Vin Diesel is producing and directing a film version of the novel due to be released next year. I'm worried that it might be turned into a big Hollywood blockbuster with the emotional content of a pea. Don't get me wrong - I adore Vin. He's a fellow nerd with a love of all things sci-fi/fantasy. Even though The Chronicles of Riddick disappointed me a bit, I still think he's pretty awesome. I just hope he's able to pull this off. It's quite the undertaking, especially since he's playing the role of Hannibal in addition to his behind-the-scenes duties.
I'm still bummed over the whole Bean mess. I don't know if I should be, but I'm even more upset with Jason's mother and Caricia today than I was yesterday. I wonder what will be next? Markel, Caricia's baby? Are we going to get a 2:00am call that Caricia was knocking back beers instead of watching her child and the baby fell and cracked her head open? Maybe I'm exaggerating and over-reacting, but their inability to be responsible adults pisses me off, especially when other life forms depend on them. They knew the blocks were loose. They knew the dogs and cat played by the loose blocks, even on them. Why in the world didn't they remove the hazardous objects before they fell? Oh, well... hindsight is 20/20 and all. There's nothing I can do about it now.
