What's up with all the crappy horror movies they put out nowadays? (Oh god, I sound like a crabby old movie critic.) I've seen three of the movies that are part of the After Dark Horror Fest, and they were all stupid. The worst was the one I saw on Friday night. I believe it was called The Abandoned. The plot was sparse and muddled. Basically, the movie was a series of scenes cobbled together to fill ninety minutes of screen time. I'm sure the film makers wanted to leave me with the impression that the movie was so out there that I didn't grasp the plot. You can't fool me, buddy. There was nothing to get. I'm not confused; you just suck at script writing.
I'm just not so much a fan of the nu horror movies (just like I was never a fun of nu metal). I watched Saw on television a few months ago and though it was crapola to the nth degree. People actually liked it enough to go see a second and third film? For real? I lump it in with the recent remake of Dawn of the Dead. Uck. What a piece of poo that was...
Luckily, Jason and I watched Cigarette Burns on Saturday, and that more than made up for the shitty direction and writing on the Friday night movie. Cigarette Burns is actually only an hour long and part of the Masters of Horror series on Showtime. Or at least I think it is Showtime that airs that series. At any rate, I highly recommend it if you are looking for a new horror piece. John Carpenter directed, and if that isn't enough of an incentive to watch it, it also contains: an angel, a crazy director, intestines run through a film projector, and some serious movie-induced madness.
