I rarely ever talk politics in this journal. I just don't see it as a proper venue, though I certainly don't mind when people on my flist talk politics. However, I'm going to make an exception for myself today.

The Presidential Election will be held next year, and the primaries are nearly upon us. I dislike every candidate on both sides of the aisle, with the notable exception of one person. I'm going to set aside partisan complaints because I'm not down with Republicans or Democrats. I think both parties have successfully fucked up the country, and both intend to continue the fucking up. If you're stuck on who's a Republican and who's a Democrat, then you might want to actually think for yourself.

That being said, you can't escape the two party system. If any candidate wants to stand a chance of winning, s/he has to run for office as a member of one of the two parties. And with New Mexico's closed primary, I can't vote for anyone because I'm registered as an Independent. However, someone has allowed me to shed my apathy for the political environment and allowed me to believe that a positive change can be made.

This sounds like an infomercial. I promise you, it isn't. I'm just very excited about Ron Paul running for President. He makes sense. He has opinions based in fact and logical. He wants to reduce government. He thinks like me. And none of the stupids running for office think like me. Imagine that.

Anyway, I've never donated money to anyone running for any political office. However, this morning I donated to Ron Paul's campaign because I believe in him that much. I also went to the trouble of changing my voter registration to the Republican party just so I can vote for him in the primary. I know the vast majority of my flist is strongly anti-Republican, but I hope that won't deter you from looking up Dr. Paul and reading about his views. He's not the typical Republican. He's actually much more of a libertarian. And I think adopting libertarian views is the only way this country is going to survive in the future.

So, here are some bits and bobs of interest about Dr. Ron Paul...
+ He wants to pull out of Iraq immediately. He also wants to stop stationing our troops in multiple foreign countries for no reason other than to have a presence there.
+ He wants to reduce the federal government by leaps and bounds, leaving much of the law-making up to state and local governments because he's a strong supporter of the Constitution.
+ He supports the Second Amendment, giving citizens the right to own guns. I own a gun. I don't run around and shoot people. My gun is for self protection. I'd hate to think that the bad guy would illegally have a gun while I can't legally get one. That's certainly not a level playing field.
+ He supports allowing workers to invest their Social Security money how they see fit instead of being forced to hand it over to the federal government for safe-keeping.
+ He supports health care freedom so that people can choose the method of health care they deem best, instead of regulations restricting what someone can or cannot do to seek treatment.
+ He wants to can the Patriot Act and give us back our privacy.
+ He strongly opposes the National ID Card that could be used to track individual citizens and catalog detailed personal information on each of us.
+ He wants to secure the borders and begin immigration reform, which would allow many more immigrants to come to this country legally. He believes the current system is out-of-date and makes no sense.
+ He wants to get rid of the IRS and the Federal Reserve. The Federal Reserve pulls money out of their ass (prints money) when they need it. This makes each dollar you have worth less. Abolishing the IRS would abolish the income tax. Dr. Paul believes that the income tax is simply a way for the government to own us. The income tax was not made permanent until 1913, and the country was able to function just fine before then. If government was greatly reduced and spending curtailed, there would be no need for such grand funding by citizens and small businesses.

As for Dr. Paul himself... He has never voted: for raising taxes, for an unbalanced budget, for a federal restriction on gun ownership, or for a raise in congressional pay. He voted against: the Iraq war, the Patriot Act, and regulating the internet. He has maintained his job as a doctor and gives a percentage of his congressional salary back to the federal government each year to pay on this country's debts.

I never thought there would be a candidate who wanted these things. But I'm very happy there is. So, I happily gave money to his campaign, which has raised over $4.5 million from donations from citizens like me. There's a bit of an event today, actually. It's the 5th of November, and everyone has decided to donate money to Dr. Paul today to celebrate that. They've estimated that he needs approximately $12 million by the end of the year in order to properly campaign and possibly win in the first five primaries. And I feel like if he doesn't win, then in the general election, my vote will go to someone I don't believe in.

Thanks for the info. I'm not happy with any of the candidates but I'm not sure I can bring myself to vote for a Republican. I will take a look at Dr. Paul.

I vowed never to register as a Rep. or a Dem. when I registered years ago. I dislike both sides equally for the same reasons (with just different methods). However, I am so for Ron Paul that I changed my registration so I can vote for him in the primaries. He's very popular with the younger crowd, apparently. I think that amuses him since he's 72 years old.

Yeah, I definitely disagree with pretty much every one of those points, but I'll spare you the point-by-point, with a couple of exceptions. Federal over state power has definitely resulted in some good things - like say making it so southern states can't assassinate black people or so there is some equality of opportunity for women in sports. As for health care, the people who don't have it still deserve it, especially children of the poor. If some dude working at McDs on some barely surviving wage gets to go to the doctor and therefore I lose some doctor choosing freedom I'm not going to lose and sleep over it.

You aren't a Social Darwinist, are you?

I'm very much a libertarian who dislikes large government. The fewer laws, the better. The less government, the better. I suppose to some people on the opposite end of the spectrum, I could come off as a bit of an anarchist, though I don't think that's me.

I guess it's not really my place to say, and I don't know much at all about US politics, all I can say is that ANYONE has to be better than Bush.
