And wouldn't you know that as soon as I write the damn blog, I sat down and read some of The Host and got addicted. I whizzed through a hundred pages without stopping. Before reading your comment, I thought I might have lost my mind because I find myself hating Jared, but completely in love with Ian. Our taste in fictional characters is astoundingly similar. :-)
I'm glad you liked The Book of Illusions. Paul Auster is one of my favorites, and that is my favorite book of his. I think the end got me because at the time I read it, I was in a long distance relationship, and the situation horrified me. I wished for weeks and weeks after finishing the novel that Hector Mann's films really did exist. Then again, I don't think they could ever live up to what is in my head.
I haven't read any David Mitchel, but I'm going to a couple used bookstores tomorrow, so I'll definitely look for the two you mentioned. I'm always up for suggestions since it is so much easier to have the assurance from someone that something is good.
