Most of the books I buy are used - bought from used bookstores in the city or online. I love buying a book and finding that the previous owner has left something of their life in the book. Usually it is a receipt or scrap of paper they've used as a bookmark. On rare occasions, it will be a note. Usually the note is was left by the person who purchased the book as a gift for the person who eventually sold it to the bookstore. I always find that sad. Someone cared enough to give a thoughtful gift like a book, and their friend or family member turns around and sells it, probably before it was even read it. Poor, abandoned books.
A couple months ago I bought Doris Lessing's Canopus in Argos series. They're soft sci-fi novels. I opened the first novel last night and found this notecard:
( the card )
Jason and I took our old TV to Mary Lou. She was so sweet, giving us both hugs. She even gave me a cross-stitched picture of bamboo in a frame to hang up in my apartment.
Our new TV kicks ass. I didn't take a picture because a TV is a TV, but it looks like this. My grandmother sent me enough for the 42" one, but Jason and I aren't the kind of people who think bigger-is-better, so we decided on the 32" one. The larger one would have just been too big for our living room.
Ferguson's vet appointment went well. I'm going to take him back in six months to get his little teeth cleaned. I don't really want to do it, but I know it needs to be done. Certain breeds have certain problems, and Chihuahuas tend to develop bad teeth if they are not professionally cleaned every once in a while. The only reason I don't want to do it is because they have to put him out. Poor little guy.
