I had to write up a warning for the new receptionist today. Payroll Girl and I had a talk with her about some of her behavior around the office. My boss (the female owner) is livid. She told me to fire her if I wanted to. I'm not that mean. Payroll Girl was on the verge of firing her, but I talked them out of it. No one has really told her to shape up yet, and I think that needs to be done before someone gets sacked.

Her problems are typical. She does the bare minimum of what she's told to do; she takes no initiative to do something helpful that she hasn't been specifically asked to do. Her telephone manners are still quite bad, even after I spoke to her about them a week into she started working here. She doesn't sound friendly or competent when she talks to clients, business associates, or residents. She is the least accurate person I've ever met; she can't transfer data onto a spreadsheet to save her life. She avoids general office tasks like filling the fax machine/copier with paper, cleaning the kitchen, and putting away the supplies. No one will give her any work to do because she is either [a] lazy and half-asses everything or [b] exceedingly dumb. I tried to impress upon her that she needs to take the initiative and offer to do more work, not just sit there. The owner made the mistakes of telling her that she could do her homework while at work. This was a mistake. She avoids other tasks to do her homework. I told her not to bring her homework into the office anymore. She needs to concentrate on actually working. So, we told her in no uncertain terms that she needs to work on all of that. I don't think I was mean at all, and what I told her was to her own benefit since I'm the only reason she still has a job. I made a list of tasks for her to do every day, week, and month. I took her around the office and we preformed all of her morning duties together so I knew she was aware of how everything is done. I laughed and made freakin' jokes while doing this with her so she wouldn't think we were attacking her.

And what do I get for my magnanimous behavior? A mopey, sulky, pouty receptionist. After we finished our talk and my instructional lessons, she sat at the front desk with big, weepy eyes and barely spoke a word to anyone else in the office, just stared out the window. She won't even look at me or Payroll Girl. When she is forced to talk to us, she does it in a tiny voice that qualifies more as a whisper. Even our resident drunk, the male owner of the company, noticed something amiss this morning after his second mug of vodka. Payroll Girl is livid. She nearly fired her while I was gone to lunch. The owner of the company is even more pissed. She doesn't want a mopey cry-baby sitting at the front desk all morning. Thankfully, the receptionist is gone for the day since she only works in the mornings. I suspect I'll have to speak with her tomorrow morning if her attitude hasn't changed. She's going to get herself canned if she doesn't buck up and take it like an adult.

If she gets herself sacked, then I don't have a receptionist in the AM, and that totally sucks. It is surprisingly difficult to find a part-time receptionist.
