Jason's being a drama queen about a small issue with the dog. I shouldn't let it bug me, but I'm can't help that little voice in the back of my head that urges me to research things.
Ferguson came to work with me on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. He was left at home all day on Thursday and all day today. We both happened to be home for lunch at the same time today. I left a few minutes before Jason. When Jason left Ferguson freaked out and started whining and barking rather loudly. He did this to me yesterday as well, but I just haven't had time to deal with it since it's crazy at work and by the time I get home it's dark and I'm exhausted.
It's a case of separation anxiety. Not a severe case where he rips apart my house and howls for hours on end. He cries and barks for about ten minutes after we leave and then he calms down. (How do I know this? I sat on the stairs outside and listened.) Jason experienced the trauma for the first time at lunch and he's flipping out, talking about how Ferguson can't be doing this everyday. I'm aware of that. He needs time to adjust. He's still uneasy about this whole transition and he's become attached to me very quickly.
I know the basics of avoiding the separation anxiety problem. Calm departures and arrivals, toys to play with, treats hidden in various places in the house, a walk before you leave and when you return, a television or radio playing. Yeah, yeah, yeah...I've got all that, but it's just not enough for him. I need to spend some time getting him accustomed to being alone. This means leaving the room or leaving the apartment for varying amounts of time - ten seconds or four hours. It's making me anxious to correct the problem ASAP. However, as far as problems go, it's a minor one. I've printed out a gazillion articles on how to ease separatin anxiety in dogs and puppies. There's on particular method I really liked and I plan on working with him this weekend using it.
Work today is just...yuck. I'm busy, but my motivation to do anything is down the tubes. I need a weekend and some really good mexican take-out tonight. I long for a cheese quesadilla and some rice. Oh, and in other food news, it should be illegal for Chinese restaurants to put any sort of meat product in their eggrolls.
