I got the pAper chAse and Xiu Xiu 7" split EP in the mail yesterday. The one where they each do a cover of a Nick Cave song. The process of recording vinyl onto a computer in MP3 format is surprisingly easy. If you have a means of playing a record and an amp, then you just need a single cord to connect that to your computer. It took me all of 10 minutes to record both songs.
So, we're doing the songs by the original artist first. Nick Cave is one of my dearest, dearest favorites.
God Is In the House - Beautiful song from No More Shall We Part. It slays me every time I listen it. Perfection, really. Definitely in my top five songs penned by Nick Cave.
Jack the Ripper - From Henry's Dream, except I'm giving you the acoustic version that was found on the "Straight to You" EP. I have a soft spot for the acoustic recording and they included it on the B-Sides and Rarities box set that was released recently.
And now we're going to do the covers.
God Is in the House (the pAper chAse) - Eeee!!! My excitement over one of my favorite bands covering one of my favorite bands/artists was extreme. I was curious to see how John Congleton would pull this one off because, while powerful, this song is rather subdued. the pAper chAse is more explosive with biting lyrics and jarring music. All said and done, I think they did an amazing job and certainly made the song their own.
Jack the Ripper (Xiu Xiu) - I know, I know... I do like the pAper chAse much better but, in all honesty, this is my favorite of the two tracks on the EP. They achieved this drone that was necessary to pull of a dark and somewhat manic song like this. It just sounds so evil. And no...the distortion is not from moving the vinyl over to digital format. That's very much intended distortion by the lovely men of Xiu Xiu.
And how could I put this up without posting the cover of the EP? It's Bobby Weaver - the bassist for the pAper chAse. Raawwrrr...
