That comes close to describing a Richie Tankersley Cusick book "Bloodroots"...Which I read around that age, thinking it was YA, when in fact it was like...her only NON-YA book. Except the whole triplet part. That's not anything close.

It doesn't sound like a Pike story though...I was a huge fan of his also...
