'The Prisoner' was popular at the time because it was the sequel to 'Danger Man', a spy chase drama. It lost viewers rapidly because it was so weird - I think I made it to the end but I really can't remember (yes, I am that old!). It was revolutionary for its time in a way - it was also very symbolic of the times. A cold war drug trip served up on prime time TV! It didn't work at the time (hence only 17 episodes!) and I think the current critical acclaim is because it still doesn't make a lot of sense. But if you are under the influence while watching it looks like it should be deep and meaningful!
